Goldsmith Primary Academy has found a novel way of ensuring children don’t miss out on celebrating their special day during Covid-19 by introducing class birthday celebrations at school.
Taking place on the last Friday of each month, the birthday parties will celebrate all the children who had birthdays during the month. They will include fun games, a cake and treats, allowing children to celebrate their special day with their friends - something they wouldn’t have been otherwise able to do.
The initiative is part of the school and ºÚÁϳԹÏÔÚÏßÓÀ¾Ã Academy Trust’s commitment to developing students’ personal potential and supporting their mental health and wellbeing which has become even more important during Covid-19.
It builds upon a huge amount of work that has taken place during lockdown and since the return to school, such as comprehensive remote learning, comprehensive remote learning, the Character 50 Challenge and Accelerated Learning Curriculum, which has enabled students to thrive academically and supported their emotional wellbeing and personal development.
The class birthday parties have received a phenomenal response from children and parents, as well as on social media with a Facebook post from the school receiving almost 7,000 shares and reaching over 1.3m people.
The first birthday party took place on Friday 6th November when over 65 children will celebrate their special day with their friends. Speaking of the birthday parties, Headteacher Leanne Bridgwood said:
We wanted to explore what children are missing out on and how we can help our community and our students have the experiences they would have done if we were not in these strange times.
Covid-19 has had a significant impact on children’s wellbeing with them missing out on a lot of social activities, including celebrating their birthday with family and friends. By introducing class birthday parties, we hope to offer some normality to children and everyone. The children really enjoyed the first party and we're looking forward to hosting many more.
